ABOUT OCCUPATIONAL THERAPY:

OT is not a cure for autism. Many children on the Spectrum suffer from Sensory Integration issues (their bodies are weak in areas of muscle tone, they seek more sensory input for their bodies, they have difficulty with motor planning, coordination, balance, they are hyper or hypo sensitive to certain smells, tastes, touch etc). As a result they often need to see an OT to help with their individual physical and sensory weaknesses. The more organized the body is, the more they are able to focus, pay attention, follow tasks and also help with their overall learning and awareness.

ABOUT OUR FAMILY:

Our son, who has an autism diagnoses by Dr. Anshu Batra M.D., refused to eat most foods. He put his head on the ground to play with toys. He couldn't wear anything with tags and putting on socks was pure torture. He didn't jump up and got car sick whenever we tried to drive anywhere. At three years old he was non-verbal and he had (and still has) extreme social anxiety. We didn't know what to do until a friend recommended we have him evaluated by an Occupational Therapist. They said he might be suffering from Sensory Integration Dysfunction. It turned out, he did.

Working with an OT has made a tremendous difference in our son's life and ours as well. Britt gave us tools to use in our home and taught us how to participate in our son's road to wellness. We felt that there were other parents of Special Needs children who could benefit from the exercises and techniques we learned, so we decided to use our background in filmmaking to produce this DVD.

Currently, our son just finished his first year in typical kindergarten (with an aide) and we couldn’t be more thrilled with his progress. He's high functioning and verbal. We continue active therapy for our son and continue to do our "homework!" We still have rough days and our journey is far from over, but we do what we can like all the other parents we know fighting for their children.

Not every child gets better or does as well as our son. That is just a fact and there is nothing we can do about it no matter how hard we try. It is our hope that this DVD will help your child overcome, or at least manage, Sensory Dysfunction and help you as parents and caregivers to take an active part in your child's intervention and ongoing therapies.
